Mrs Kalavathi teaching in India

Mrs. Kalavathi, 45 year old housewife from Tagachakuppe and Village Level Worker for our Adopt a Village Project in India

" I had volunteered to be part of Adopt a Village: A Rural Rabies Prevention Project team as a village level worker (rabies volunteer) because dog/animal bite is one of the important issues in our village.

In the past, I did not bother treating a dog/animal bite or practiced methods like application of jackfruit gum with coin, plant sap, mud, and lime on the bite site. I was not aware of the consequences of dog/animal bite and of opinion that rabies can be cured.

The project team has educated me about rabies and its prevention. I am spreading this knowledge among the community by using the teaching aid provided to me by the team.

Today, I am the first contact person in my village in case of dog/animal bites. I can categorize the wound and advise them to wash the wound with soap and running tap water immediately and apply antiseptics. I will take the guidance of the Medical Officer of the project and accompany the bite victims to the health centre for administration of rabies immunoglobulin and vaccines.

I also take the responsibility of ensuring the completion of vaccination as per schedule. I feel proud that, I am involved in saving the life of my villagers from the most dangerous disease of rabies."
